Exterior

Which microcement set to choose for exterior use?

Outdoor walls

For façades and decorative surfaces. Microcement can be used on solid exterior walls, plinths, cladding and visible parts of the exterior.

Terraces and walkable surfaces

For heavily used outdoor surfaces. Suitable only for stable substrates with resolved drainage, slope and expansion joints.

Walls, steps and plinths

To unify outdoor details. Solutions for concrete walls, stairs, plinth areas, retaining structures and adjoining garden elements.

Complete microcement sets for exterior

Complete microcement sets for exterior are designed for outdoor areas where you want to create a modern continuous surface without typical joints. They are suitable for selected walls, terraces, retaining walls, plinths, steps, garden elements and other solid mineral substrates. The exterior is more demanding for microcement than the interior. Surfaces are exposed to rain, UV radiation, frost, temperature changes, dirt and substrate movement. Therefore, it is necessary to use a complete system, prepare the substrate correctly and not underestimate the final protection.

Where can microcement be used outdoors?

Outdoor walls and visible surfaces

On outdoor walls, microcement can create an elegant concrete look without joints. It is suitable for solid renders, concrete surfaces, plinths, walls and decorative parts of façades, provided the substrate is cohesive, stable and protected against permanent moisture.

Terraces and outdoor walkable surfaces

With terraces, it is necessary to be stricter. The substrate must be solid, stable, correctly sloped and free from active cracks. Drainage, detail connections, respect for expansion joints and appropriate final protection are essential.

Steps and entrance areas

Outdoor steps are subject to mechanical and climatic stress. The greatest attention must be paid to edges, corners, risers, connections to surrounding structures and areas where water or snow may accumulate.

Walls, plinths and garden elements

Microcement can also be applied to concrete walls, plinth areas, flower boxes, surrounds, benches or other solid garden elements. The substrate must not be damp, crumbly or structurally unstable.

Why use microcement outdoors?

Microcement outdoors creates

a continuous modern surface without typical joints . This makes terraces, walls or outdoor walls look cleaner and more unified than common cladding or paving with joints.Another advantage is the low thickness of the layer, which makes microcement suitable for renovations and adaptations of existing solid surfaces. Outdoor concrete or mineral surfaces can be unified into a single appearance without significantly increasing the construction height.

Exterior surfaces leave no room for compromise

With outdoor surfaces, it is important to remember that microcement only replicates the substrate condition. If the substrate is cracked, damp, crumbly or structurally moving, the problem may show through the final surface.

The most common errors occur when applied on poorly sloped terraces, over active expansion joints, with permanent substrate moisture or insufficient protection of edges and details. It is not worth taking shortcuts outdoors.

What does the exterior microcement set contain?

The exterior set is designed as a complete layer system. It contains materials for substrate preparation, microcement layers, pore sealing and final surface protection depending on application type.

You select the set according to the actual area in m². For outdoor surfaces, we recommend allowing extra material especially for steps, edges, walls, complex details and more absorbent substrates.

What to watch out for on terraces?

A terrace is one of the most demanding applications of microcement. The surface is exposed to water, sun, frost, mechanical stress and often substrate movement. Therefore, the substrate must be solid, matured, stable and correctly sloped.

Water must not remain standing on the surface or leak into details. Expansion joints must be respected and construction problems resolved before application. Microcement is not a repair for a poorly made terrace – it is a final surface for a properly prepared substrate.

Shade selection for exterior use

Colours behave differently outdoors than indoors. Direct sunlight, shade, rain, surrounding greenery and the façade can significantly alter the final colour. Light shades heat up less in the sun, grey tones create a modern concrete look, and warmer tones complement natural materials well.

Before a larger installation, we recommend checking the shade on a physical sample outdoors – ideally both in sunlight and shade.

Is microcement suitable for exterior use?

Yes, microcement can be used outdoors, but only on suitable solid and stable substrates with the correct layer system and final protection.

Can microcement be used on terraces?

Yes, but terraces are a demanding application. The substrate must be stable, correctly sloped, free of active cracks and with resolved drainage and expansion joints.

Is microcement frost-resistant?

For outdoor use, the key factors are the complete system, substrate condition and surface protection. The greatest risk is not frost itself but water in the substrate, poor drainage and structural movement.

Can I apply microcement over old outdoor paving?

Only if the paving is firmly fixed, not hollow, the substrate is stable and there is no risk of rising or permanent moisture. The condition of the entire layer system must be carefully assessed for outdoor paving.

Must expansion joints be preserved outdoors?

Yes. Active expansion and construction joints must be respected. If merely covered with a continuous layer, substrate movement may transfer into the microcement.

Is microcement suitable for outdoor steps?

Yes, if the steps are solid, stable and correctly prepared. Special attention must be paid to edges, slope, protection of details and areas where water may accumulate.

Can microcement be used on walls and plinths?

Yes, microcement is suitable for solid walls, plinths and garden elements. The substrate must not be crumbly, damp or structurally unstable.

Can I do exterior microcement myself?

For simple vertical surfaces, this is possible. Terraces, steps and water-exposed areas are more demanding and require precise substrate assessment, correct detailing and the right system.

Not sure about the exterior set?

Send us a photo of the surface, substrate type, area in m² and information whether it is a wall, terrace, steps, plinth or wall. We will recommend the suitable set, layer system and further procedure.
