How the kitchen backsplash is applied
The following steps are a brief overview. Exact drying times, sanding and material sequencing should always be verified in the current application instructions.

- Substrate inspection and preparation
The substrate must be solid, cohesive, flat, dry and free from dust, grease, silicones, loose layers and active cracks.

- Priming
Apply Primer Plus to the prepared substrate to unify absorbency and improve bonding with Aqua Base underneath.

- Aqua Base
The base microcement layer unifies the surface and creates a solid foundation for the final decorative skim.

- Aqua Nature
The final microcement is applied with a steel or plastic trowel in a thin layer. The direction of the trowel determines the surface pattern.

- Sealing and final protection
After drying and sanding, Gela Cryl TR100 is applied followed by two layers of two-component polyurethane varnish.

A well-prepared substrate decides the outcome
Microcement is a thin surface coating and replicates the condition of the substrate. Unevenness, movement, cracks or poorly repaired joints may show through the final surface.
The original ceramic tiles must be firmly fixed and not hollow. The surface must be thoroughly degreased, roughened and joints levelled so their pattern does not imprint on the microcement.
Junctions at the worktop, sink, sockets and other penetrations must be technically resolved prior to finishing. Flexible joints should be made with appropriate sanitary or construction sealant according to the specific detail.
Cleaning and long-term protection
How to correctly use microcement in the kitchen
The final 2K protection creates a sealed and easy-to-clean surface. Proper cleaning and gentle use help maintain appearance and functionality of the protective layer.

Do not allow grease, sauces, coffee or coloured foods to dry on the surface unnecessarily.

For routine cleaning, a soft sponge or cloth, water and a non-abrasive detergent with neutral pH are sufficient.

The surface near open flames and very hot objects must be protected according to your kitchen’s specific design.

FAQ about Aqua Nature microcement in the kitchen
Is Aqua Nature suitable behind the kitchen worktop?
Yes. The complete system with pore sealing and final two-component varnish creates an easy-to-clean surface resistant to water, grease and typical kitchen dirt.
Can microcement be applied over existing tiles?
Yes, if the tiles are firmly fixed, not hollow and the substrate is stable. The surface must be degreased, roughened and joints and any unevenness smoothed before application.
Is the surface truly joint-free?
Yes, microcement is applied as a continuous coating without traditional tile joints. However, construction and flexible joints must remain correctly technically resolved.
Is microcement resistant to grease and stains?
After proper curing of the final 2K varnish, the surface is resistant to common grease, water and stains. Nevertheless, contamination should be removed without delay.
Can Aqua Nature be used behind a hob?
Can Aqua Nature be used behind a hob?
Yes, provided a safe distance and the technical requirements of the hob manufacturer are observed. In the immediate vicinity of an open flame or exceptionally high temperatures, appropriate thermal protection must be chosen.
How is a microcement splashback cleaned?
Use a soft cloth or sponge, water, and a neutral non-abrasive cleaning agent. Do not use wire wool, abrasive powders, or harsh solvents.
What thickness is the final layer?
The total system thickness usually ranges approximately between 2 and 3 mm, depending on the evenness and preparation method of the substrate.
Is the screed ready to use?
Yes. Both Aqua Base and Aqua Nature are single-component screeds supplied in a paste consistency. They only need thorough mixing before application.
How to calculate the required number of square metres?
Multiply the width and height of all planned areas and then add the results. Also include niches, edges, and other adjoining parts. We recommend adding approximately 5% for reserve.
Is the set suitable for DIY application?
Yes, the ready-to-use materials simplify application. However, it is essential to strictly follow the substrate preparation, sanding, technological pauses, and the method of applying individual layers.
Can the surface be locally repaired?
Smaller local damage can usually be repaired without removing the entire area. Due to the hand-drawn effect, the repaired spot may have a slightly different appearance.
When can the surface be used normally?
The final polyurethane lacquer requires the prescribed curing time. Full loading is recommended only after complete curing according to the current technical and application guidelines.
