Can I apply microcement onto waterproofing?
Updated: 15.07.2026
✓
Yes, but only if it is compatible and the surface allows good adhesion of the subsequent layer.
Detailed answer
Microcement can be applied over waterproofing, but it must be a compatible surface with good adhesion. In a shower, the entire build-up is more important than the coating itself – the waterproofing must already be completed and fully functional beneath it. It is not just about the type of substrate, but primarily its condition. Before application, check for strength, flatness, grease, dust, cracks and any movement. If the surface is considered risky, it is better to reinforce it or create a test area first. It is possible to apply on single-component as well as two-component polymer-cement waterproofing systems, non-absorbent surfaces do not necessarily need priming, or alternatively apply a Primer Plus primer.
Common mistakes
- underestimating waterproofing and connection details
- incorrectly resolved slope or drainage
- insufficient sealing of heavily stressed areas
